About us

The Mathulini Communal Property Association (CPA) is a land-holding legal enity estatfishes in terms of the CPA Act no.28 of 1996, after a successful land Claim lodged with the Regional Land Claims Commission in 1998 on behalf the Mathulini Tribe under Inkosi Bhekizizws Nivard Luthuli.

Upon the succesfull settlement of the land claim in the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform registered the Mathulini Communal Property Association as a legal entity in 2012. 

The Mathulini Communal Property Association comprises of 128 members, each member representing a household of families who were removed from properties under claim due to apartheid-era legislation. The governing body consists of 11 committee members. Of the 11 committee members 10 are elected and the standing member which is Inkosi is not elected. Administration is led by an Executive Director, overseeing various departments accountable to both the Director and the Committee. The entity operates under a constitution adopted by its members, ensuring transparency, accountability, and equitable treatment.

Members benefit through annual dividends and participation in projects aimed at poverty alleviation. The CPA owns 6,680.206 hectares of land registered in its own name. This land is primarily planted in sugarcane and macadamia nuts. Income is generated through a 9-year, 11-month management agreement with former landowners ensures property productivity while the community prepares for full operational control in the near future. Under this agreement, the CPA receives 10% of all gross proceeds from sugarcane and macadamia sales. The Land owned by the Mathulini CPA is valued at R500,000,000.00
